Experts with links to drugs industry 'hyped swine flu'
Conclusion This was a well-conducted study, albeit based on a small sample of articles. The finding that academics with ties to the drugs industry were more likely to make a higher assessment of risk from swine flu, and those promoting the use of antiviral drugs were more likely to have industry links, is worrying. The general issue of academics with undisclosed links to the pharmaceutical industry being interviewed by journalists is of concern. That said, the study does not prove that media coverage either fuelled public anxiety about swine flu or the policy decisions made about drug or vaccine funding. Similarly, the...

LITFL Search
The problem with providing education in the hospital environment is the persistent and unwarranted use of Internet Explorer which acts like a cubist Picasso converter to contort the website into a random series of incoherent text boxes Review of the old site highlighted a few functionality issues. One of the most frustrating elements of moving to a scalable mobile responsive design was the dropdown menus. We had far too much information crammed into an unpredictable space which was only intermittently visible…so they have been discarded with the new build. We have decided to run with ‘single menu tabs’ li...

FindZebra: A Search Engine That Diagnoses Rare Diseases
The Danish researchers behind FindZebra would not be happy about my title as they published a warning on the top of their search engine with the message: “This is a research project to be used only by medical professionals.” This search engine only uses medical databases similarly to SciencerollSearch and named the rare disease correctly after entering the symptoms 67%  of the time, compared to 32% using Google. I think educating both patients and medical professionals about the proper use of search engines and operators would provide even better results. Here is their description. There are close to 7,000 rar...

Authorship Order in Medical Education Publications: In Search of Practical Guidance for the Community.
This study describes principles commonly applied to authorship order decisions within the medical education community and educators' opinions about the significance of authorship order. Approach: A questionnaire was developed to ascertain current practices related to authorship decisions. Sixteen items were rated in terms of frequency of actual use and the desirability of the practice using a 4-point rating scale: 1 (never), 2 (sometimes), 3 (often), and 4 (always). Additional questions addressed the perceived significance of authorship order. The last set of questions provided information about respondents' personal and c...

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in swine: an animal model for thoracoscopic lobectomy training
The objective of this study is to demonstrate the technique of lobectomy using videothoracoscopy in swine, highlighting the steps to be taken during its use in surgical experimentation. METHODS During the advanced course on video-assisted and thoracoscopic procedures carried out at IRCAD Latin America, Barretos, Brazil, 40 swine were used for the hands-on course on video-assisted upper left lobectomy. Monopulmonary ventilation was performed by blocking the left main bronchus. Surgical procedures were performed using three ports and the anterior dissection technique (fissureless approach). The pulmonary hilar structures we...

Educating youth swine exhibitors on influenza A virus transmission at agricultural fairs
Summary Influenza A virus (IAV) is a major zoonotic pathogen that threatens global public health. Novel strains of influenza A viruses pose a significant risk to public health due to their pandemic potential, and transmission of influenza A viruses from animals to humans is an important mechanism in the generation and introduction of IAVs that threaten human health. The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to develop real‐life training scenarios to better inform swine exhibitors of the risks they may encounter when influenza A viruses are present in swine. Educational activities were implemented in five Oh...

A systematic integrative framework to describe comprehensively a swine health system, Flanders as an example
The objective of this study was to unravel the complexity of a swine health system by using a system-thinking approach for the case of Flanders (Northern part of Belgium). To that end, qualitative interviews were held with 33 relevant stakeholders. A hybrid thematic analysis was conducted which consisted of two phases. First, an inductive thematic analysis was conducted and secondly, the resulting themes were classified into the building blocks of a systemic framework. This framework combined a structural and a functional analysis that allowed to identify the key actors and their functions. Additionally, a transformational...

The NC229 Multi-Station Research Consortium on Emerging Viral Diseases of Swine: Solving Stakeholder Problems through Innovative Science and Research.
Abstract The NC229 research consortium was created in 1999 in response to the emergence of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), a viral agent responsible for devastating economic losses to the swine industry. The project follows the traditional "consortium" approach for Multistate Agricultural Research driven through the US' State Agricultural Experiment Stations (SAES), wherein stakeholder-driven needs to combat swine infectious diseases are identified and scientific solutions pursued by combining funds from federal, state, commodity groups, and the animal health industry. The NC229 consor...

O-038 Sympathetic nervous system activation causes cerebral perfusion deficit and cerebral vasoconstriction in Swine
ConclusionIn swine, electrical stimulation of SCG results in reproducible cerebral vasoconstriction and perfusion deficit comparable to cerebral vasospasm. This can be inhibited by prior local anesthetic injection into the SCG, a possible therapeutic target for cerebral vasospasm.Abstract O-038 Figure 1CT perfusion scan (top row) coronel view of approximate fronto-temporal area of swine brain (outlined in white box) at baseline, with right SCG stimulation, with lidocainc + right SCG stimulation. Swine used in the medical university-overview of 20 years of experience.
Authors: Kobayashi E, Hanazono Y, Kunita S Abstract Center for Development of Advanced Medical Technology (CDAMTec) in Jichi Medical University was established in FY 2009. It is the first educational research facility specialized for medical research and training using swine in Japan. Preclinical studies on large animals are essential prior to clinical trials to develop regenerative medical products and medical equipment. We have continued comprehensively considering using miniature swine for experiments to develop advanced medical technologies and train physicians with advanced clinical abilities, while paying att...

Viral infections of pigs used for medical education. A Japanese experience.
Abstract Infectious viruses pose a threat to all living organisms, including humans, and can cause significant morbidity. Previous experience with pigs in medical education and research, rather than in domestic control settings, has led to a unique perspective on viral infections in swine. In this article, common porcine infectious diseases have been listed, based mainly on the authors' experience thus far. For example, young domestic pigs that were used in surgical training and infected with hepatitis E were subjected to quarantine and isolation treatment, and attempts were made to develop a DNA vaccine for swine...

Evaluation of the impact of live pig trade network, vaccination coverage and socio-economic factors in the classical swine fever eradication program in Peru
Publication date: Available online 27 October 2018Source: Preventive Veterinary MedicineAuthor(s): JP. Gómez-Vázquez, M. Quevedo-Valle, U. Flores, K. Portilla Jarufe, B. Martínez-LópezAbstractClassical swine fever (CSF) is a viral infectious disease of swine with significant economic impact in the affected countries due to the limitation of trade, culling of infected animals and production losses. In Latin America, CSF is endemic in several countries including Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil and Peru. Since 2010, the National Veterinary Services of Peru have been working to better control and eradicate the disease with an int...
